User Interface Design Workshop - Description

Audience:

System software developers, application developers, information developers, and user interface designers who develop or design software using graphical user interface (GUI) and object-oriented user interface (OOUI) concepts, methods, and techniques. Students who have no experience in designing user interfaces or who have no formal education in the areas of cognitive psychology, human factors engineering, or user interface design will benefit from this course.

Description:

In the computer arena, the competition is at the user interface. Industry surveys have documented that usability, or ease-of-use, is the number one factor in buying decisions of computer systems. This course, taught by an experienced user interface designer, is a concise summary of state-of-the-art human-computer interface design principles, usability practices, and design methods.

Through presentations, discussion, demos, exercises, and workshops the class focuses on stating relevant design principles in their simplest form, illustrating them with examples, applying them to sound interface design, and implementing an object-oriented interface design process using application scenario case studies.

The course teaches practical, ready-to-apply principles extracted from a variety of disciplines, including human perception, motivation, learning psychology, cognitive psychology, research in human-computer interface design, and practical experience. This course also covers all aspects of designing graphical and object-oriented user interfaces (GUIs and OOUIs).

Designing User Interfaces is becoming more complex, as software technology accelerates at an ever-increasing rate. The Object-Oriented user interface is being used more and more in new software products. Microsoft, with Windows95 and the new Office97 product will increase the demand for this type of Interface. This course covers these new techniques, including Agents, Assistants, Wizards, Navigators and the seamless integration of the "Web".

Whatever your hardware or software platform or whatever your target audience, this course will teach you how to design software that will be user-centered, user-friendly and competitive in the market place.

Extensive workshops provide students with the opportunity to apply the important steps of the user interface design process.

Objectives:

Upon the completion of this class, students will be able to:
  • Apply sound usability principles and practices to interface design.
  • Incorporate user feedback into the interface design from the start.
  • Apply relevant principles of human perception, cognition, and memory.
  • Identify and prioritize user needs.
  • Conduct useful, low-cost evaluations.
  • Participate effectively on user interface design teams.
  • Critique your own and others' interface designs.
  • Promote good user interface design within their development organization.
  • Understand what good user interface design is and why it is important.
  • See things from the user's perspective.
  • Recognize computer interfaces that are easy to learn and easy to use.

  • Describe the concepts behind application-oriented and object-oriented interface design.
  • Understand the new techniques that are being used in the industry today.
  • Understand the industry direction in User Interface Design.
  • Identify obvious user interface deviations in their own and other products.
  • Apply object-oriented user interface design techniques to their projects.
  • Create a User Interface Design specification.
  • Modify their product development process and methods to incorporate object-oriented tools, techniques, and new technologies.
